A reflection of how Simon went about his training since Christmas, working at the small things and learning what he needs to do for this style event. Awesome result!

Rob Hill - probably not the result he wanted, and despite feeling average all day, still held strong - great to see him string another sub 3.30 run split together.

Madi Taylor - really was having a great day out in the swim and bike however the IM gut issues started pretty much straight away on the run. Certainly started out ok but lack of fuel and fluid certainly caused a few issues on the run BUT to her credit did come good and ran home strongly.

Anne Henry - First time in Hawaii is NEVER easy, so much to think about and be distracted by, as well as the massive self doubt one has due to the heat and winds. Anne worked hard and swam really well and really rode a solid race. Despite the heat and fatigue of the run, Anne was moving along nicely. Anne caught up with Madi and then they supported one and other – running down the finish chute together - SPECIAL TRG moment!! Both Anne and Madi agreed without the other, they were not sure how the run would have panned out.

TRG Sponsor Updates!

Great news for TRG members for 2016 – 2017, as Orca come on as our new wetsuit sponsor! From what I hear, a few falls to the ground in the last 3km including in the finish showed he gave 120%. Top result for a first time IM.Tony Ryan, 11:50. Despite limited running going in, raced confidently. Steady all day 23rd in his AG out of around 90 starters, strong bike and run and really that was so solid considering.Darrel Thomas, in 12 months, around 1 hour off his time finished in 12hrs today. PB on the bike, swim and run. 100th in AG – up from 250th last year at IM Melbourne. An impressive result.Margaret Mielczarek - new to the squad and finished in 12.38. 28th in AG. Has come such a long way in a short time. So happy with the fact she got back around 25 places after the swim. Lou Derrick, as I said, entered this to do with kids and ended the last one standing. Built from surgery and around 8 years out of the sport – great swim, 6th out of the water and then hung tough on the bike and ran so consistentlyNeil Gilbert had a cold going in. He was looking in good form after swim and bike and was sticking to his usual pace up until the 30km mark. I am still awaiting confirmation of his finish. Hoping all is ok!

Joe Margheriti raced 70.3 his 6th for the season. Well deserved, will be his spot on the Aussie World 70.3 team. Today despite NOT being his fastest, was still impressive – in a field of around 1300, he has come 135th, 23rd in AG (150)

Basically top 10%. Both coming 2nd in AG and Virginie was 2nd female overall.

Portarlington saw Jenny racing on home territory, coming out with a win in her AG, Declan raced strongly in the swim and on the bike for 6th place and Neil, the ever reliable, for a 3rd place.

Weekend of 19th/20th March

Team ‘ Lord’, also members of TRG, Had a an outstanding day!

Tom Rodgers, after a 6month break due to entering the work force, went in with a mission but knew he had a very tough job with Levi Maxwell heading down there as well. Levi was in great form being undefeated in a number of races. Tom came away with 1st place overall and was able to hold off Levi on the run. He did this by running an outstanding 1hr 15mins run – 2nd only to Levi. Congrats.

Great to to see Rosie back racing as well. 2nd female over the line and 1st in her AG in the Olympic distance event.

Dan Oldham raced well, with the big goal of running strongly. We came away with a Bronze Award for clubs under 75 athletes.

In the individual event, really tough races for our two pro athletes BUT BOTH showed great mental strength and showed respect for the race. Very easily, they could have pulled the pin, as sometimes goes through yout head when you are not sitting where you want. However both showed, on the run, they have what it takes to succeed in the long course events. Leigh Stabryla ran the fastest run split of the day on a tough run course, and with warm conditions. Wendy just had a few things that didn't go her way, but she kept her composure, dug VERY deep and came in with a respectable placing and run split.

Congratulations to Callum Crawford; a lot of learning in a short period of time, and he showed composure and stuck to the plan. Callum will improve every time he races, and his swim time shows Butch is working magic with him!

Kate Lister was also full of composure shows she is coming along very nicely for her IM debut. Very similar to Sarah DeWolf, who looked so strong on the run.

Sharon Bolger has shown an enormous improvement over the past 12 months . If there ever is an example of choosing a goal and just having the determination to just work at it and never lose sight of what you want to achieve, take a look at Sharon…

Congrats to Liz Dornom and Jenny Kelly winning their AG and hence spots to the worlds. Very well deserved for both but especially Jenny who is recovering from a broken wrist.

TRG take on the Challenge in Melbourne

Congratulations to all athletes who raced today! The support of the squad was been overwhelming and I am very grateful. It really does show the strength of the group. All the planning and training ensured that there were no major issues on the ride. The support team of Emily and Rod went above and beyond, so that I was able to operate at my best every day. They were a huge part of the ride. The team was responsible for loading the van in the mornings, preparing my breakfast and meals for the day, driving at 25 km/hr for 7-9 hours each day, taking photos and videos, bike maintenance, organising media interviews, arranging accommodation, unloading the van and assisting with the recovery process each day. Coach was also a critical member of team. She guided me through six months of training to ensure that I was physically and mentally prepared for the ride. Julie has been my coach for the past eight years and we have developed a great relationship, which enables me to achieve my personal best. During the ride Julie was of great assistance checking on my physical and mental condition and also working closely with Emily and Rod. A key success of the ride, because of Julie's coaching, was that I did not sustain any injuries in the preparation for or during the ride. Shaun Knott (brother) was also a major help to the ride. He was critical in the final preparations of the support vehicle and daily updates with the support team. Leaving from Federation Square in Melbourne on Friday, 4 December was, to an extent, heading into the unknown. I knew that the ride would be one of the biggest challenges of my life but I did not know what to expect. Days 1–3 through Victoria proved to be some of the toughest days of the ride with 40+ degrees celsius temperature combined with hills. Through increased stopping, cooling, increased fluids (electrolytes and water) and maintaining my food intake I was able recover well each day. After Day 1 the start time of the ride was quickly moved to 1 hour prior to sunlight (Victoria: 5:30am; South Australia: 4:30am; Western Australia: 3:15am). Most days would involve riding for 1.5–2 hours followed by a break then breaks every 1-1.5 hours. Breaks would generally be 15–30 minutes and involve preparing more fluids and food for on the bike and in the support vehicle. It would occasionally include having a cold coffee and food on the side of the road. A critical part of the ride was making sure that my weight was maintained, which I was able to achieve (I love my food!). The major highlight of the ride was the support of friends and families, as was the amount of support that the ride received on the road. It was amazing to see the flora and fauna of regional Australia. One of my most memorable sections was riding alongside the Great Australian Bight. It was also amazing to see the Wedge Tail Eagles in their natural environment. Fortunately, I did not experience any major issues on the ride. I only encountered one flat tyre and an issue with the gearing system of the bike that Rod was able to fix at a local bike store in Kalgoorlie. The toughest part of the ride was riding through the Fraser Ranges (Day 14, between Balladonia and Norseman in WA). My legs struggled with the hills, headwinds and heat. Fortunately, the following day was flatter and I was able to regain strength in the legs. Apart from this day the legs and body did not experience any other issues. Arriving into Bunbury after twenty days of cycling was an unbelievable experience. My father is truly grateful for all the support that the ride received. He continues to fight MND as best he can although it is progressively taking away things that he loved doing. A highlight of the afternoon was to be able to see Dad laughing and enjoying life with his family and friends. The major objective of the ride was to raise awareness and funds for MND. I believe that this has been achieved. Emily (also Media Manager for the ride) was able secure 6 live radio appearances, 5 newspaper articles (including a front cover) and a television appearance. The ride was able to raise $50,000 for the Cure for MND Foundation. This is beyond any of my expectations. The money will be used by Cure for MND to provide funds for state-based MND associations to care for patients with MND and also towards MND research. If you aren’t following Cure for MND already, please do so on (https://www.facebook.com/Cure4MND/) or subscribe to their newsletter (https://curemnd.org.au/) to hear about their developments in research and other activities they are involved with. I am honoured to be able to assist such a great organisation. Please find attached some images from the ride.
